Topical Map
Last updated March 13, 2026
The Topical Map is Rankspiral's content strategy engine. It organizes your keywords into a structured hierarchy of pillars and clusters that builds topical authority — the thing that makes Google see you as the expert in your space.
How It Works
Your content map has three levels:
- Pillars — Broad topic areas that represent the main themes of your business (e.g. "Shopify SEO", "Email Marketing")
- Clusters — Subtopics within each pillar (e.g. under "Shopify SEO": "Dropshipping SEO", "Theme Optimization", "Product Page SEO")
- Keywords — Specific search terms within each cluster that become individual articles
AI-Powered Suggestions
Rankspiral can automatically suggest your content structure:
- Suggest Pillars — Analyzes your business, offerings, and existing keywords to recommend 3-5 content pillars
- Suggest Clusters — For each pillar, suggests 5-8 topic clusters
- Suggest Keywords — For each cluster, suggests 8-12 keywords with a mix of informational, commercial, and transactional intent
All suggestions include search volume and difficulty data so you can prioritize the highest-impact topics.
Map View vs Calendar View
The Content Map has two views:
- Map View — Visual tree showing pillars → clusters → keywords. Use this to organize your strategy and assign keywords to clusters.
- Calendar View — Drag keywords onto specific dates to schedule them. Use Auto Schedule to automatically distribute keywords across your calendar.
Why Topical Authority Matters
Google's algorithms increasingly reward sites that demonstrate comprehensive expertise on a topic. Publishing a cluster of related articles — all linked together — signals to Google that you're an authority. A scattered blog with random topics won't compete with a well-structured topical map.
